Broken Social Scene Presents…Brendan Canning

Broken Social Scene made huge waves in the indie rock scene and despite currently being “broken up” they are still continuing to produce new tunes. Last year Kevin Drew released the first disc in the Broken Social Scene Presents series with Spirit If… and today marks the second release, Brendan Canning’s Something for All of Us… The formula is the same: One member’s solo album + BSS backing them = Broken Social Scene Presents ___________ . Though not all of the members appear to be involved in the series, some is better than none. Many have gone on to successful music careers (Feist to be specific) while others are sticking to the BSS thing.

Those sticking with the BSS thing defiantly have not lost their touch in making good music. Something for All of Us… holds true to the BSS name and sound. Though it isnt anything ground breaking or genre defying, it is full of enticing tracks and packs an ear full. Many, many layers of sound in each track provides an excellent musical experience and will please any BSS/Kevin Drew/Brendan Canning/Whoever is spotlighted next fan.

Something for All of Us… is out now and streaming at Brendan Canning’s Myspace page.

Torche – Meanderthal

The guys in Torche are indeed mad scientists. Well, figuratively speaking that is. The band has taken Mastadon’s book, How to Make Metal, and Hot Water Music’s essay, Do Punk Rock and Do It Well, thrown the two in a cauldron, and created the recipe for their latest album, Meanderthal. Blistering tracks like “Fat Waves”, “Grenade”, and “Triumph of Venus” exemplify the band’s ability to brew up something new and creative in the rock and roll scene.

Meanderthal has been out since April, but is still fresh enough for listening.

White Denim – 11 Songs (Exposion)

Happy Belated Birthday to our lovely country! Still going strong at a lively 232 years old and counting. No better way of celebrating than with fireworks and hot dogs, both of which I hope you indulged in. Just because the US of A’s birthday has come and gone doesn’t mean we cant still celebrate with more explosions, correct? Well the boys in White Denim are doing just that. Currently on tour with Tapes N’ Tapes, White Denim are unleashing their latest LP, 11 Songs or Exposion as it has come to be known, via live dates. Currently there are no hard copies of the album floating around but the band has put their music in the hands of the internet. Various songs are streaming on multiple websites, some even hosting the entire album. A full digital release is expected later this summer.

But on to the music. Hailing from Texas, White Denim are the offspring of the spastic blues rock movement sweeping the industry. The sound of the record is reminiscent of The Black Keys with plenty of Maps and Atlases and a dash of Minus the Bear’s technicality. Sheer energy through out the entire disc. “Don’t Look That Way At It” begins the album with the twangy guitar picking that is heard throughout. “Ieieie” is a Black Keys tune on crack while “Migration Wind” paints the perfect soundtrack to a would-be surf film.

The album is exciting. Simply stated. Pick this one up when it finally comes out this summer.

Styrobots are Taking Over!

Michael Salter, like the rest of us raised in the 80s, is a robot fanatic. Legos used to be his forte when he was younger, but now that he is much older he has moved onto grander things. Grander things such as styrofoam. Styrofoam you say? Yes, his creations are made of interlocking blocks of styrofoam ranging from a small 16 inches to a huge 22 feet as seen in the above photo. Salter’s work is on display out in California. So if you are out west before October, check it out.

A New ‘Greener’ Milk Jug

For the sake of the sheer awesomeness in this post please disregard the lady with the broken wrist in the picture above. Instead let us focus on the ‘Holy Grail’ that she holds in her hand. What you see here is the newly designed milk jug. Eco-friendly and a bit cheaper, the new jug caters to the now ‘greener’ society we all live in.

The new jug has come with plenty of criticism as people are having a hard time pouring with it. Cmon people. You’ve been pouring milk since you were a we tot. Its not that hard. I like to say my first activity once leaving the womb was pouring myself a glass of milk. Man, I love the stuff. Heres to the first step in the new Milk Revolution! Viva Leche!

Here, in this friendly graphic, are the benefits:

Thanks be to Kitsune Noir for the update.
